The Manu Cultural Zone is one of the three zones of Manu National Park that covers the high mountains, mountain mesophyll forest and lowland rainforest. In this zone there are small villages and native communities that work in productive activities such as agriculture and timber on a small scale, as these activities are controlled by the Ministry of Agriculture and Manu National Park authorities (SERNANP). The cloud forest is currently one of the areas of the world where wildlife still lives in abundance in its natural habitat, there are 8,000 species of plants, more than 400 species of birds and 10 species of mammals. In this area they also offer walks in the Machuwasi lagoon.

Itinerary

Day 01: Cusco – Cloud Forest – Hiking

Our guide will pick us up from our hotel between 05:30 and 06:00 am then we will pass through the villages and towns until we reach Ajanaco at 3500 meters above sea level. Then we will descend through winding roads through the cloud forest, a place of lush vegetation, orchids, heliconias and ferns. We will also be able to observe the cock of the rock, umbrella bird, trogon, quetzal or oropendolas. Finally we will arrive at the lodge where we will stay and spend the night.

Meals: Breakfast on the trail, lunch in the cloud forest and dinner at the lodge.

Day 02: Atalaya – Machuwasi Lagoon – Night Hike

After breakfast we will take a short walk to see birds and monkeys. Then, we will board our vehicle to travel for an hour to Atalaya where we will board a boat for 30 minutes and sail towards our lodge, on the way we can bathe in the river and enjoy a mud bath. After lunch we will visit the Machuhuasi lagoon and navigate by raft, here we will be able to observe shanshos, reptiles, dwarf caimans, capybaras, tapirs and other fascinating natural creations. After dinner we will have a great night walk and finally we will spend the night in our lodge.

Day 03: Parrot Clay Lick – Ceiba Tree – Hike

At sunrise, we will cruise to admire the parrots licking the nutrient-rich clay wall. After watching them we will enjoy our delicious lunch and relax before exploring the fauna and flora including the Ceiba tree.

To end the day we will take a night walk to observe insects, amphibians and snakes, after which we will rest at our lodge.

Day 04: Hike – Atalaya – Cloud Forest – Cusco

After a delicious breakfast we will return by boat to Atalaya and board our transportation back to Cusco, on the way we will find hummingbirds, orchids and waterfalls. Our arrival to the city of Cusco will be between 05:00 pm to 07:00 pm.
